Vic: Quarantine officers intercept giant millipedes

Quarantine officers in Melbourne have intercepted an airmail package containing twogiant millipedes.

The millipedes, packed in a small box with pieces of apple, were sent from New Yorkto an address in metropolitan Melbourne marked as electrical goods.

Quarantine officers at the Melbourne Airmail Transit Centre discovered the 20cm-long,280-legged invertebrates on Saturday afternoon, about two days after they were postedfrom the United States.

The sender of the package could face fines of up to $60,000 or 10 years jail for afalse customs declaration.

Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service entomologist KATE SPARKS says the millipedes,the parasites they carried and the apple pieces all posed a huge threats to Australian'snative plants and animals, as well as the agriculture industry.

The millipedes will be destroyed in the next couple of days.
