BISESERO, Rwanda -- Nine wooden coffins containing remains of Rwanda's 1994 genocide victims were lowered into an unfinished crypt Tuesday in a ceremony honoring Tutsis who fought back against the state-sponsored slaughter.
When complete, the tomb will form part of a larger memorial to the 500,000 Rwandans killed in massacres that began four years ago Tuesday, orchestrated by the extremist Hutu government.
Nearby, a huge pile of skulls and bones with bits of cloth clinging to them awaited burial. Red, green and yellow Rwandan flags flew at half-staff, flapping in the breeze.
