Fire in Baxter Detention Cntre causes estimated $2mill damage
A deliberately lit fire has destroyed parts of the Baxter detention centre in PortAugusta in South Australia.
A spokesman for the Department of Immigration confirms 11 people were taken to hospitalwith smoke inhalation after this morning's fire.
An number of other detainees have been moved elsewhere in the centre.
Spokesman PETE PEDERSEN says 17 accommodation units have been destroyed and he saysthe fire brigade estimates the damage at around $A2 million.
He says the fire broke out in the same unit where a fire had been lit using mattressesand plastic chairs two days ago and it's believed this fire was also deliberately lit.
Fire crews from Port Augusta, Whyalla and and Port Pirie attended the fire.
