Qld: Stiff new fines for motorists from March 1
Drivers in Queensland will be slugged with heavier fines and penalties from next month
as part of a crackdown on the state's growing road toll.
Tailgating .. running red lights .. and driving with a DVD or TV visible to the driver
.. will all attract bigger fines and penalties.
Premier PETER BEATTIE's announced the measures after a state cabinet meeting in the
north Queensland town of Atherton.
He says it's to help reduce inattention .. aggressive driving and distraction.
Mr BEATTIE says over the past 72 hours there have been some horrific accidents .. including
a smash just south of Ingham that claimed four lives.
He says while the cause of that crash isn't known .. it's clear the simple mistakes
people are making on the roads every day are costing people their lives.
The fine for running a red light jumps from 135 dollars and three points to 225 and
three points .. tailgating leaps from 30 dollars and one point to 175 and one point ..
and having a DVD or TV visible to the driver will jump from 60 dollars and one point to
100 dollars and three points.
